The Pipedream is over 😢
Another stand-out workflow automation tool is closing its doors as private equity and big tech drive full-send toward the AI abyss 🫡. Pipedream.io announced yesterday (9/30/2026) that they are moving the Workflows and String products into maintenance mode with a formal shutdown date of March 31, 2027, no doubt related to high-brow AI strategy from their parent company, Workday, who bought Pipedream not too long ago.
Pipedream fit a special niche between Zapier and pro-code infrastructure, allowing those comfortable with code to quickly extend platform to platform integrations with custom code steps that provided the often needed flexibility to transform or manipulate data between workflow steps. This data manipulation need is what drove me off of Zapier in 2020. Through my involvement with NocodList.co, I discovered Pipedream.io as they were trying to get listed on the site. After a quick walkthrough, I fell in love with the integrated code editor, managed OAuth, and robust run history and workflow replay. As someone who needed to push beyond Zapier, but didn’t want to manage full code automation infrastructure, Pipedream was exactly what I needed. I could build robust, high reliability workflows, faster than on any platform previously.
For our work at QREW Technologies building custom apps and business automations, Pipedream quickly became a go-to tool in the toolbelt. Hundreds of automations were built for us and our customer base.
Will AI take down no-code / low-code platforms?
A few years ago, the overwhelming sentiment amongst tech prophets was that AI would quickly end the need for #nocode / #lowcode platforms. At QREW, that has not proved true. For us it’s been quite the opposite. Most things we see our customers build with AI end up becoming deterministic, code driven, processes. Only sprinkles of AI within the workflows themselves. If code & data are still the backbones of deployed business automation, then you need a reliable and observable environment to run those workflows. That’s where Pipedream continued to prove valuable for us.
We would write the flows in plain English, have Claude code certain steps, use the Pipedream CLI to configure it in the environment, and then deploy and test through the UI. Whenever a change was needed, or error surfaced, we would always go to the UI first before asking Claude. It’s just more trustworthy observability and management.
I’m not sure if the Pipedream leadership recognized this trend amongst their users, or perhaps we were an outlier. Clearly though, the money was pointing at a future without UI observable workflow and managed infrastructure… And now all the faithful patrons have to get our thumbs out there and hitchhike those workflows to a new home.
What will that be for you? Our logic boils down to two options: direct to cloud, or moving to n8n.
Where do you go from here?
Direct-to-cloud has a certain appeal for full ownership. I can manage and control every aspect of my workflows. Regarding cost, it could probably be run at a fraction of the cost of Pipedream using Cloud Run (GCP) or Lambda Functions (AWS) along with a host of supporting infra (crons, persistent databases, auth secrets, and logging). The major downside is that you have to architect a ton of cloud services and then maintain and monitor all of that, plus design curated visibility. That is something I would largely have to trust AI to support and ideate, as I’m only surface level familiar with how platforms like n8n & Pipedream build their environments. So if I’m going to have to rebuild that workflow management layer anyway, why not just do n8n?
n8n offers cloud-hosted and open source deployment options, so you can bring it in house if you want. What it brings to the table is a very mature observability and management system, as well as MCP support for Claude, or your AI of choice, to easily codevelop these workflows. The self-hosted n8n model is likely where we will move the majority of our workflows to, for the reasons stated above. Self-hosted gives you the option to connect it securely to other cloud resources in-network (SQL db, Storage Buckets, Data Warehouses, etc.). Which is a big plus when you consider the flexibility and robustness that affords you.
As sad and frustrating as it is, we will all have to make the move somewhere… soon! Thanks Workday :)
If that seems daunting or time consuming for you, the QREW Team can help. We’ll provide white-glove service to migrate your Pipedream workflows, moving your high-value workflows off of Pipedream before the March 2027 shutdown date.
